Mary A. Greene

Mary A. Greene, formerly of Irwin, passed away peacefully Monday October 7, 2024 at St. Anne Home, Greensburg. Her sweet smile will be forever missed. She was born January 23, 1932 in Oil City, a daughter of the late Chester and Goldie (Schrecengost) Plyer. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years Charles W. Greene Jr. in 2011, and her three siblings Howard Plyer, Margaret Wygant, and Dorothy Fornof. Mary graduated from Oil City High School. Mary met Chuck Greene the love of her life, when they worked at the local A&P. Together they raised four daughters in a loving and faith based home. Mary thrived at being a loving wife and mother. She loved to bake and cook for her family. Nothing will ever smell as good as her homemade bread fresh out of the oven. She passed on her cooking and baking skills to her daughters. After raising her daughters she worked many years and retired from JC Penney, selling coats and dresses. She excelled at her job and enjoyed helping her customers. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Irwin. Mary is survived by her four loving daughters Susie (Jim) Lewis of Florida, Beverly Sternick (Mike) of New Stanton, Cindy (Red) Balentine of Apollo, and Peggy (Randy) Cockerham of Seymour, IN; seven grandchildren Keith (Trish) Smith of Indiana, Alison (Tim) Gray of Greensburg, Jaime Sternick (Dan) of Ohio, Jessica (Derek) Reich of Maryland, Brian (Ashley) Balentine of Utah, Melissa (Brayton) McClure and Jennifer (Sam) Short both of Indiana; fourteen great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter; also many nieces and nephews. Over the years Mary had many close friends and neighbors that she loved and cherished. The family would like to give special thanks to St. Anne Home and their staff for the excellent care Mary received for the past three years, especially to her caring nurses Lori and Cindy. Thank you to Independence Hospice for their kindness and support. Friends and Family will be received from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, at the William Snyder Funeral Home, Inc., 521 Main Street, Irwin, 724-863-1200.
