Ruth Lavonne (Thorpe) Woodward, 103, of North Huntingdon, died Monday August 30, 2021 at home. She was born March 10, 1918 in Perryopolis, a daughter of the late Edwin and Clara (Freed) Thorpe. She attended Geneva College where she became reacquainted with her eventual husband the late Chester B. Woodward who also attended the school. After marriage and settling in Clairton they left their comfortable home to pursue their dream of building their own home in North Huntingdon. They started there in a garage where their young family lived in a small room in the back until the home was completed. Ruth loved to garden, loved her flowers, and was an excellent cook and baker. She loved traveling with her husband in their RV and they both enjoyed square dancing. She was a former member of the Ridge Road Women’s Club, a former secretary for Long Run Presbyterian Church, and a former volunteer for Meals-On-Wheels. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her daughter Joan Marx; her sons-in-law Oral A. Ullom, Fred Marx, and Michael Serratore; her grandson James Ullom; and siblings Eva, Phoebe, John, Esther, Mary, Tilghman, Joseph, Edwin, and Roy Thorpe. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Ullom of North Huntingdon and Lynne Serratore of West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the William Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main Street, Irwin, 724-863-1200, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Daniel Kaser, officiating. Interment will follow next to her husband at West Newton Cemetery. The family would like to thank all her caregivers including Brittnee, Haley, Nikki, Savannah, Terry, Tracey, Angela and Danielle, Redstone Hospice nurses Jennifer and Jill, and her social worker Molly for all the kind and compassionate care.
